Gerda Philipsborn Learning Center Students Celebrate Their Documentary Screening on World Refugee Day

On the 20th of June, behind the slums’ houses—tucked in a small compound, a story of growth bloomed: the Gerda Philipsborn Center of Learning, with as many as 50 students, witnessed the screening of a documentary made by the them. The event occured as a symbol of resilence on World Refugee Day. What made the event more powerful was that the students at Greda Philipsborn Learning Center belongs to the young refugee cohort.

Starting the event with a welcome speech, Ms. Shaziya, educator, Greda Philipsborn Center, sprinkled words of warmth on the individuals present in the event. Continuing the speech, Ms. Shaziya highlighted the routine of the event and initiated the most electric event—the screening of the documentary. A projector was placed, happiness was cracked, and the first glimpse of the documentary was aired. Sounds and visuals too garnered the attention of everyone present.

Gerda Philipsborn Students Celebrate Their Documentary Screening.

What made the documentary more remarkable were the people behind making it: the students of the Gerda Philipsborn Center. The students who once struggled to make it to the classroom were today witnessing their growth beyond what they decipher. Months earlier than this, Shaagird, in collaboration with Cinema on Wheels, conducted a workshop on documentary making for the students. Today, they were witnessing their own documentary, marking a moment of pride.

What made the documentary powerful was the people featured in it were the students themselves—talking about the issues they face in their vicinity.

Rounds of applause and pangs of happiness erupted as the documentary came to an end. Each eye, each face, looked at the other to share the momentum of pride.

“We all made this together; everyone contributed, and the editing part was the most fun,” Sumaiya, a student, said.

The excitement was not over yet when another event unfolded. The life skill session.

The students of Gerda Philiposborn Center, who are also refugees, were forced to leave their homeland and find shelter in India. They waded through difficulties and made house in a small shelter behind the learning center. However, not everything is available in the settlement—the prime being hygiene.

Compromising on hygiene was a difficult choice, but not leaving them in this situation was Shaagird’s decision.

The day was filled with laughter and excitement for the students.

Making hygiene a habit for students was today’s session plan. A “personal and dental hygiene” comprehensive workshop was conducted.

The first part of the workshop was handwashing training enunciated by facilitator Afeefa.

The session was started by the importance of hand washing, followed by the dangerous impact of contaminated hands.

The day witnessed the Hygiene Awareness Session—unfolding a spate of growth.

Handwashing is a habit that is not known in the vicinity of these refugee students. The session enlightened the students about its importance and trained them through practical steps.

Shortly after this, the dental health session occurred. Brushing the teeth daily twice was introduced to the students.

Hygiene kits were distributed to the students.

Conducted by facilitator Nisha, the session enunciated healthy dental habits, repercussions of its failure, and practical ways through which dental hygiene can be achieved. In the meantime, for both sessions, the inquisitiveness of students lingered. Questions were met with practical answers, and doubts were dealt with patiently.

The hygiene kit contained toothpaste, a toothbrush, handwash, and a handkerchief

Moving towards the ending of the session on higher spirits, Aasif Mujtaba, Founder and Director, Shaagird, took to the stage. Talking about the refugee day, which is dedicated on 20th June, he talked about the resilience of these students. Moving further, he highlighted the importance of a healthy life and urged the students to follow the steps taught in the session.

In conclusion, a hygiene kit containing toothpaste, a toothbrush, handwash, and a handkerchief was distributed.

“The day was delightful, a day of learning, excitement, and fun,” said Noor Fatima, a student with eyes glittering with happiness.
